Spatial Decision Support System for Biodiversity Conservation Prioritization

Background

Conservation of biological diversity is on priority for the world’s scientific community in the 21st century. It is therefore important that a huge baseline database be prepared and linked with spatial information to facilitate decision making. However, when the matter comes to actual decision making, the uncertainty imparted by the handling of such large databases comes into picture. In order to compensate for this uncertainty a need for integrating this database with community and locale specific knowledge is felt. The integration process induces the use of the technologies like data warehousing, data mining and online transaction and analytical processing. A web based approach is thus best suited for distribution of biodiversity databases. In this website we demonstrate an approach of using the above technologies along with Internet GIS for a web based approach on spatial decision supporting. This is perhaps the first time that such an effort is being made for Biodiversity Conservation Prioritization. This approach can be further improved with more and more locale specific knowledge, coming into picture into the data warehouse.

Objectives

  • To priotize areas for Biodiversity Conservation
  • Aid to planning and management of areas prone to loss of biodiversity
