The question of whether India will attend the Asia Cup 2023 in Pakistan in September remains unresolved. If they decide not to participate, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has warned that they may boycott the ODI World Cup scheduled to occur in India a month later. The controversy began last year when BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced that the Asia Cup would likely be moved to a neutral location since India would not travel to Pakistan. Since then, there has been a never-ending war of words between the BCCI and PCB, as well as former cricketers from both countries. It is important to note that India and Pakistan only face each other in ICC events and Asia Cups, as they have not engaged in any bilateral series since Pakistan’s tour of India in 2012-13.

In contrast, former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar is optimistic about the future and has even made a prediction that an India-Pakistan final will take place in both the Asia Cup and the World Cup. Akhtar stated, “India and Pakistan will meet in the final of the Asia Cup as well as the World Cup. India will travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, and Pakistan will reciprocate by visiting India for the World Cup. I am confident that relations between India and Pakistan will improve, and trade will resume. I encourage people from both sides to promote positivity and bridge the divide instead of creating more barriers,” he shared with Sports Today. The former Pakistani fast bowler, known as the Rawalpindi Express, also reminisced about the 2011 World Cup semi-final held in Mohali, and expressed his desire for Pakistan to ‘avenge’ their loss against India in the upcoming 2023 World Cup. It is worth noting that Akhtar did not play in the Pakistani team during that particular semi-final, which India won quite easily to advance to the final.

“I am eager for Pakistan to avenge our defeat in the 2011 World Cup, even though I did not play in that match. I would love to witness the India-Pakistan final at either Wankhede or Ahmedabad, wherever it may be held in India. I will make every effort to attend the final,” Akhtar stated.

When questioned about the feasibility of an India-Pakistan final, given that it is still uncertain whether Pakistan will travel to India for the World Cup, Akhtar remarked that the governments of India and Pakistan must take charge because the issue is beyond the control of the BCCI or PCB.

“The BCCI and PCB have no control over the situation. They cannot take any action without seeking approval from their respective governments, especially in the case of bilateral series or travel. Therefore, there is no point in issuing statements. Both parties should refrain from making any further statements. When the relationship between the governments improves, they will engage in dialogue, and the situation will improve. PCB and BCCI do not have the authority to initiate or halt anything. It would be in the BCCI’s best interest if Pakistan travels to India for the World Cup. It will be a significant event at that time. However, they should focus on their own business and avoid speculating unnecessarily,” Akhtar further stated.
