Similar to the first installment, the trailer for the sequel showcases stunning visuals, giving viewers a glimpse into the grandeur of the film. It also establishes that all of the lead actors will have significant roles, with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan stealing the spotlight as the vengeful Nandini, who seeks to avenge her father’s death. In one scene, she declares, “We will destroy the Cholas.”
The entire cast and crew of the movie, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Vikram, Jayam Ravi, and Sobhita Dhulipala, among others, were in attendance at the launch event. In Ponniyin Selvan 1, the audience witnessed the tale of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan) in his formative years, before he ascended to the throne as the Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947-1014). The film starred Jayam Ravi as Arulmozhivarman, while Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan portrayed other crucial characters.
Globally, the movie grossed over ₹500 crore at the box office, making it a massive success. In Tamil Nadu, Ponniyin Selvan 1 surpassed the lifetime earnings of Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, grossing over ₹183 crore in the state and becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time.
After a gap of ten years, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made a comeback to Tamil cinema with this film. Aishwarya essayed dual roles in the movie, portraying the characters of Nandini and her mute mother, Mandakini Devi. Upon release, both the audiences and the critics were thoroughly impressed with Aishwarya’s performance.
