The show is produced by Roy Kapur Films and Emmay Entertainment, with Nikkhil Advani as creator and Abhay Pannu as director. It features a fictionalized account of the lives of Dr. Homi J. Bhabha (played by Jim Sarbh), who played a key role in India’s nuclear program, and Dr. Vikram Sarabhai (played by Ishwak Singh), who was instrumental in establishing the Indian space program. The series is set between the 1940s and 1970s and also showcases the contributions of other prominent figures, such as Mrinalini Sarabhai (played by Regina Cassandra), Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (played by Arjun Radhakrishnan), and Jawaharlal Nehru (played by Rajit Kapur), who was then the Prime Minister of India and a supporter of the scientists. rocketboys wiki rocketboys wiki

Advani told Variety that they made a conscious decision not to be weighed down by the legacies of Dr. Homi Bhabha and Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. Instead, they chose to present the characters as genuine, very young men chasing a dream if they were taking the audience back to the 1940s. Therefore, in season 1, they were not referred to as Dr. Sarabhai and Dr. Bhabha but rather as Homi and Vikram.

According to Advani, season 2 of the show shifts its focus towards geopolitics. The plot centers around India’s first nuclear test in 1974 and delves into the contributions and limitations of each character. The stakes and ambitions of the characters have grown significantly, and the involvement of the CIA adds to the intensity of the situation. rocket boysnetflix rocket boysnetflix rocket boys telegram

According to Roy Kapur, the second season of the show is incited by the death of Jawaharlal Nehru. He explains that the country is only 17 years old and still in its infancy, making it challenging for people from younger generations to comprehend the situation. The country has only known one leader and is now left without direction. With a new set of political ideologies in place, the scientists’ access to the seat of power has become restricted. This leaves them vulnerable to the changing political climate, putting their dreams and vision at risk.

According to Roy Kapur, the period between 1964 and 1974 was a fascinating and eventful decade, marked by the emergence of Indira Gandhi and her significant role in shaping the course of events. He described it as a gripping, intense, and dramatic era, encapsulated by the entire season.

Advani and Roy Kapur have not completely disregarded the idea of continuing the story. While the show focused on exceptional individuals, they have contemplated extending it during weaker moments. However, they ultimately believe it should come to an end. “The premise of the show was about renaissance men, about people who did extraordinary things. Sidd and I have discussed the possibility, but in moments of clarity, we agree that it should be concluded,” Advani explained.

Roy Kapur stated that if the story were to continue, it would focus on India’s nuclear and space programs, as well as the people who have advanced them from 1974 to the present. He added that if the story explored the theme of two individuals whose personal and professional lives are closely linked within a particular field, it could be applied in various contexts, providing limitless possibilities.
